Empey criticises 'lack of self-awareness' at anti-Protocol rallies!

VETERAN Ulster Unionist Lord Empey has criticised a "total lack of self-awareness" amongst many speakers at anti-protocol rallies. He said those behind anti-protocol rallies had not acknowledged that the border in the Irish Sea was brought about by Brexit.
Prime Minister David Cameron in February    2016, the Ulster Unionists discovered that      "the government had no plan to ensure         *orthern Ireland would be protected after                                  Brexit".

"Self-evidently, if there had not been this particular form of Brexit, there would be no need for any border in the Irish Sea and the Protocol is the legal expression of that border," he said. "Nearly all the speakers were advocates for Brexit.
"Did they do any homework beforehand to find out what the government was going to do about the fact that *orthern Ireland has the only land border between the UK and the EU?

"Surely, they must have known that there were going to be problems. The people deserved that their leaders at least explored what the solutions were going to be before making a recommendation to leave the EU."
Lord Empey said that during a meeting with then Prime Minister David Cameron in February 2016, the Ulster Unionists discovered that "the government had no plan to ensure *orthern Ireland would be protected after Brexit".
"Things had not been properly prepared as Cameron didn't think he could lose," he said. He said anti-protocol, pro-Brexit campaigners including Baroness Kate Hoey and former MEP Ben Habib have not acknowledged that "perhaps they had acted too hastily without adequate preparation". He accused the pair of sending mixed messages about Brexit. "To give one example of how far many of the platform speakers are from reality, I quote from an article written by Baroness Hoey on May 13th 2016 in the Daily Telegraph.
The Baroness said: 'Brexit won't hurt *orthern Ireland at all - instead it will brighten its future!'," he said.
He said the DUP endorsed Prime Minister Boris Johnson's proposal to the EU in October 2019 for a border in the Irish Sea. " It's as if they have blocked out of their minds what they did in 2019 and pretend that they had nothing to do do with the current mess," he said.
