Graffiti over Shankill war remembrance art "shameful"

"To deface them in this way is disrespectful and shameful"

Graffiti which has been daubed over panels in the Shankill area remembering those who died in army service has been described as "shameful".

The graffiti was added to the panels sometime in the last week.

The panels already carry artwork in remembrance of the sacrifices local people made during the war efforts.

Shankill councillor (pictured above) Nicola Verner condemned those behind the vandalism and said it did not make sense.

"It's incredibly sad to see the graffiti which had appeared on a number of murals in the community," she said.

"These murals have been installed to remember the many men and women who lost their lives and served their country in the wars.

"To deface them in this way is disrespectful and shameful.

"I will never understand why those responsible thought it a good idea to deface something so honorable with their pointless graffiti.

"I hope the damage can be repaired and the murals back to their original condition."

It is clear who was behind the incident, but the Shankill History Twitter account said that the person responsible had effectively signed their name to the graffiti.

With many thanks to Belfast Live for the original publication.
