AN UNELECTED: Loyalist with 'no mandate' has claimed a Centre for the Union paper offers 'legitimate compromise' over NI Protocol

A paper detailing a series of proposals aimed at resolving unionist concerns over the NI Protocol has been described as a "legitimate compromise" for the EU to consider. 

Jamie (Poundshop lawyer) Bryson co-authored the paper which he claims "sets out what will be acceptable and, more importantly making it clear what won't" be acceptable to unionists

That's according to co-author of the Centre for the Union paper, Jamie (Poundshop lawyer) Bryson. 

He says the the 80-page paper "sets out what will be acceptable, and more importantly making it clear what won't" be acceptable to unionists. 

The NI Protocol is a trade deal which was agreed between the UK and EU during Brexit negotiations. It was aimed at avoiding a border between North of Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. 

However, because of Brexit it has put a Brexit Sea Border in the Irish Sea for some goods needing checks. That has angered unionists and led to the collapse of power sharing at Stormont.

The publication of the paper comes as 'cordial and constructive' talks were held in London on Monday talks were held in London on Monday between Foreign Secretary James Cleverly, NI Secretary Chris Heaton-Harris and European Commission vice-president Maroš Šefčovič.

Both sides hailed an agreement in the area of data-sharing and EU access to British IT systems as a key step in resolving the row over the protocol.

Part of the Centre for the Union's publication proposes a UK Constitutional Bill which Jamie Bryson has said would "restore the supremacy of the Acts of Union and ensure the principle of consent operates as it was promised to unionism, to protect Northern Ireland's constitutional position". 

He added "there has to be an end to all EU law and Northern Ireland restored to a full part of the UK internal market rather than, as the High Court has said, Northern Ireland being more in the European Union than in the United Kingdom."

As for the suggestion that there could be an "EU tunnel", Mr Bryson said: "The EU tunnel is what the UK Government would do in terms ... you would have to opt into it on pain of criminal penalty and if you're exporting into the EU, you would have to comply with EU standards."

"In terms of extra checks, and if the EU weren't happy that that protected their single market, it would be up to them to use technological solutions to conduct checks on the land border," he added.

"So what that would effectively do is, both sides are giving a little bit here. The UK is creating a criminal penalty regime to require businesses in the UK to opt-in and ensure they are compliant with EU standards.

"That's a step that the UK is taking but the EU then, in order to ensure the UK internal market stays open, would have to say if they want extra compliance checks then it's for them to police their own single market and this would have the impact of keeping both the land border primarily open and avoiding any checks internally within the UK and it's a way that could satisfy everybody's identity and aspirations.

"The protocol works on the basis that you move what is essentially an international border to an internal UK border and that was never acceptable, so we don't shy away from that, there would have to be compliance checks if the EU want them.

"The UK don't want them, unionism is saying, we think the proposal for the EU tunnel underpinned by criminal penalties would be sufficient to protect the EU's single market but if the EU aren't satisfied then it's for them to protect their own single market.

"There's being good neighbours and looking out for each other and having neighbourhood watch but you don't lock your neighbours door for them, so that's a matter for the EU to police their own single market.

"I've been very open about my view from the outset, if there has to be a border and it's a choice between a border internally within the UK or along the international border then it should be where it belongs.

"We start from that position and we work backwards and I think this solution does this and presents a legitimate compromise which can be supported widely across unionism and hopefully will be taken seriously by the EU and Irish Government."

Anger has been expressed across the the religious devide after the UVF's mouthpiece Jamie Bryson claimed he received an abusive phone call on social media.

Apparently threats were made to Mr Bryson's seven-year-old son during the call. It's an issue which has been ongoing for some time and has been reported to the PSNI, he said on Twitter.

In a statement, a PSNI spokesperson said: “Police have received a report of an abusive phone call and an investigation has now commenced.”

   Sounds like the PSNI/RUC need to take      a look at whether Mr Bryson’s claims          are genuine (or not) or is he only trying                       to cause division 

Speaking on Friday, Mr Bryson said he is accustomed to receiving abuse and threats. "But to have my little boy threatened in any manner by a coward hiding behind a phone is very disturbing," he said.

The culprit must have a family and for that reason, the abuse is "deeply distressing", Mr Bryson added.

He thanked the leaders of political parties for contacting him in relation to his Tweet. "I am particularly grateful to Colum Eastwood and Naomi Long, who are political opponents with whom I often have robust exchanges with, for taking the time to reach out.

“Political disagreements and the rough and tumble of being in the public arena is one thing, but threatening to [...] assault a seven year old little boy [...] is something else entirely.

“Senior PSNI officers have also been in touch, and I am also grateful for that, and I am confident that the perpetrator will be identified and will not only face me in the courtroom, but also society as a whole," he said.

Mr Bryson said on Thursday night: "I have thought long & hard about whether to publish this, but have decided it’s gone too far. This has been ongoing for over a year.

"My little boy is the most gentle little man you could meet. He doesn’t deserve this. This latest incident has been reported to the PSNI."

DUP leader Sir Jeffrey Donaldson said in response: "This is utterly vile and appalling.

"It seems there are no limits in terms of how low some will go. Hopefully the Police can apprehend those responsible," he said.

Justice minister and Alliance leader Naomi Long said: "That is absolutely shocking, Jamie.

"I hope someone here recognises that voice and assists the police locating whatever sick individual is saying those vile things about your son."

SDLP councillor in Belfast Seamas de Faoite said: "Appalling and utterly reprehensible. I hope the PSNI are able to identify and pursue the culprit."

His party leader Colum Eastwood said: "This is disgusting, Jamie. I'm sorry you've had to put up with this."

In a later Tweet, Mr Bryson said: "Thank you to everyone- from all backgrounds- who reached out after the incident involving my lovely little boy. I very much appreciate it.

"The perpetrator is not reflective of nationalists/republicans or anyone else. All decent humans are rightly repulsed."

The PSNI has been asked for a response.

The UDA threatened to break the arms of two teenage girls who set fire to one of its bonfires before the Eleventh Night unless their families paid fines totalling £2,000.

The blatant act of extortion took place in Donaghadee, Co Down, where the terror group built a bonfire next to the hockey pitch.

On July 5, two 13-year-old schoolgirls set fire to the structure, resulting in six fire engines being called to put out the blaze.

Furious North Down UDA leaders quickly identified the teens as being responsible.

They warned their families that unless each paid ‘compensation’ of £1,000, the kids would have their arms broken.

The cash was quickly handed over, and UDA members rebuilt the bonfire with new pallets in time for the Eleventh night.

The threats have been the talk of the town, with the terror group ordering locals to stay silent over fears the media would find out.

“The wee girls’ families have been told they’ll have to pay another £1,000 fine if they speak out,” a loyalist source told Sunday Life.

“Of course the girls shouldn’t have set fire to the bonfire, but they’re only young kids. It’s sickening that their families have been made to pay money to the UDA to replace the pallets.”

Until recently the North Down UDA had been led by prominent loyalist Dee Stitt, who denies links to criminality.

His replacement, a well-known thug from the Kilcooley estate in Bangor, has been blamed for issuing the threats to break the schoolgirls’ arms.

He took over from Stitt last year and immediately stamped his authority on local criminals by having convicted Bangor cocaine dealer Mark Turner (45) kneecapped for street fighting.

The father-of-five was previously close to the North Down UDA before falling out of favour. The punishment-style shooting was a warning to him not to step out of line.

Our loyalist source added: “At least when Stitt was boss he could be reasoned with. His replacement is far worse. He’s let the power get to his head and is running around like a Poundland Johnny Adair. He’s forever threatening to put people out. If it wasn’t for the UDA backing him up he’d struggle to put the bins out.”

    Jamie Bryson is now employed by the                   UDA on a full-time basis 

Jamie Bryson, who represents Dee Stitt said: “Mr Stitt has no involvement in any proscribed organisation and/or criminal activity.

“He condemns any criminal activity without reservation. He has no knowledge as to the matters alleged pertaining to a bonfire.”

Details about the terror gang’s threats to break the schoolgirls’ arms came in the same week that PSNI chiefs appealed for information about reported criminality at bonfires.

Assistant Chief Constable Local Policing Bobby Singleton said: “To date we have received a total of 57 separate reports of potential offences at bonfires over July 11 and 12 period. Potential offences include the theft and destruction of political material, flags, hate slogans and effigies. 

“We have gathered and secured evidence of potential offending, appointed investigators, commenced inquiries for each of these incidents and engaged with the Public Prosecution Service, which will ultimately have responsibility for decisions in relation to prosecution. 

“The vast majority of people celebrate their culture peacefully and lawfully and do not want celebrations to be undermined by anti-social behaviour, criminal activity or hate directed towards others.”

A civil action taken by UVF mouthpiece Jamie Bryson against a Belfast solicitor will be heard at Newtownards County Court in September.

Mr Bryson revealed in September 2020 that he intended to sue Colin McMenamin, who then worked for the Tughans law firm in Belfast – alleging he had been subjected to online abuse and harassment.

According to the NI Court Service, the case will be heard on September 19, 2022.

Mr Bryson said he initiated the civil action over what he claims are “derogatory and defamatory remarks” and is “seeking substantial damages.”

He said: “I confirm my legal claim against Mr Colin McMenamin, who is currently a solicitor at KRW Law, will proceed to hearing in September.

“I am seeking substantial damages for what I allege to have been a course of conduct of harassment and abuse over a significant period of time.

“This included numerous derogatory and defamatory remarks about me.”

Mr Bryson added: “At this time I can say no more on the specifics of my damages claim, but all matters will be aired in open court and of course the media will be free to observe and report on proceedings in line with the principle of open justice.”

Mr McMenamin has not yet responded to a request for comment.
