After Lisburn and Newtownabbey Castlereagh Council received only one tender to supply its Christmas tree, from a firm in Co Kerry, DUP councillor Jonathan Craig suggested this might have been due to the protocol.
All other councils in the North of Ireland confirmed they have had no trouble securing their Christmas trees, which was widely reported as debunking Cllr Craig's claim.
Councilor Jonathan Craig (on the left) just in case there's anymore confusion
Yet the protocol has seriously disrupted tree imports from Britain. The only reason this does not affect most councils in the North of Ireland is that all the councils here get their Christmas trees from local growers or the Forestry Service, for a typical all-in cost of £1,000.
The confusion is why Cllr Craig and Lisburn and Newtownabbey Castlereagh Council paid £18,000 to a private firm? I wonder if had anything to do with the DUP now belonging to the British Tory Party as in their name - the Conservative and Unionist Party?
